  2. Simultaneously press the RELEASE buttons, located on each side of the module, to remove the module.

  1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

  2. On the rear access door, either turn the knob counter-clockwise or depress the two latches inward. Then remove the door.

  4. Replace the rear access door. Turn the knob clockwise to ensure that the rear access door is locked correctly; otherwise, the display will show a "Rear Door/ Module is missing" message.

Photolab printers: Clearing a paper jam inside the printer

If the paper jam cannot be removed from the rear of the printer, follow these steps.

  1. Remove the USB cable from the printer, if applicable.

  2. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

  3. Open the top cover. Unplug the power cord from the printer.

For the HP Photosmart 7550 printer, the top cover is one solid piece and cannot be opened. For this printer, open the print cartridge access door and then unplug the power cord.

  4. If applicable, disconnect the LPT cable from the back of the printer.

  5. Remove the paper from the In paper tray.

    note:

If several sheets are jammed, grasp a sheet in the middle of the stack and with firm, even pressure, pull the sheet outward. Usually, removing one or two sheets from the middle of the stack will release the pressure and the rest of the paper can be removed.

  6. After removing the paper, check inside of the printer to ensure that there are no pieces of paper still inside the printer.

  7. If labels were printed recently, check to see that there are no labels stuck inside the printer. If there are, carefully peel them off.

  8. Close the top cover of the printer, replace the rear access door or two-sided printing module, plug in the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

  9. Press the CANCEL/NO or OK button on the printer front panel to clear the paper jam message.

  10. If the paper jam or the paper jam message has cleared, print the document again.

  11. If the paper jam will not clear, perform steps 1-9 again. If, at this point, the error message still does not go away, contact HP for assistance.

    note:

If after clearing the paper jam, the print carriage stalls or sticks, remove and reinstall the print cartridges. For instructions, refer to the Replacing Print Cartridges section in the User's Guide.

Appliance Printers: Clearing a paper jam inside the printer

If the paper jam cannot be removed from the rear of the printer, follow these steps.

  1. Remove the USB cable from the back of the printer.

  2. Remove loose paper from the paper tray.

    note:

If this is a multi-pick issue, remove the paper from the middle of the stack first, then work your way out.

  3. Press the Power button to turn off the printer and wait for about one minute for the printer to completely turn off.

  4. Turn the printer back on. The printer should eject the page during start up.

  5. If the page is still jammed, turn off the printer then wait at least a minute before continuing with the next step.

  6. Remove the power cord from the back of the printer.

  7. Pull the paper out of the front of the printer using slow and gentle force.

    note:

Pulling the paper out quickly may damage the printer.

  8. Once the jammed paper is removed from the printer, reconnect the power cord.

  9. Turn on the printer.

Avoiding paper jams

  • Do not use extremely smooth, shiny, or coated papers unless they are specifically designed for HP Photosmart printers.

  • Do not use multi-part forms (such as duplicate or triplicate forms).

  • Do not use torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, or curled paper.

  • Do not use paper with bent edges or paper that will not lie flat.

  • Make sure that the OUT tray is installed correctly.

  • Make sure that the paper adjusters are not pushed up so tightly against the paper that it is bending in the paper tray. The paper-width adjuster should be placed against the left side of the paper. The paper-length adjuster should be placed against the end of the stack of paper.

  • Do not put more than 100 sheets of 75 g/m2 paper (or a 1/2-inch stack) in the paper tray.

  • Do not keep more than 50 sheets in the OUT tray.

  • Do not use paper longer than 356 mm (14 inches).

  • Do not mix paper types in the paper tray.

    note:

If paper jams continue to occur, try printing with other media or paper types. Refer to the User's Manual that came with the HP printer for supported media types and specifications.
